Derek Chauvin Stabbed in Prison

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Murder

Chauvin Sentenced to More Than 20 Years in Prison

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A former Minneapolis police officer who pleaded guilty to murdering George Floyd has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison. Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison on Thursday, June 25, 2021. The sentence came after Chauvin pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Floyd.

Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. Floyd's death sparked widespread protests and calls for police reform. Chauvin was fired from the Minneapolis Police Department and charged with murder and manslaughter. He was convicted of both charges in April 2021.

The sentence handed down to Chauvin is the longest ever given to a police officer in Minnesota for an on-duty killing. The sentence sends a clear message that police officers will be held accountable for their actions.
